No, “honest” (part II)

In my continuing series of sequels to posts that just don’t lend themselves to sequels, I’ve rethought the idea of quotation marks sounding sarcastic.

I now think that quotation marks sound sarcastic even if you use them in the appropriate way. Check this out:

  • My gay friend Walter really liked that musical, “Cats.”
  • “Hello,” he lied.
  • My article was published in “Time” magazine.
  • “AP Style” is no italics, anywhere.
  • You think that book sucked, try “Scarlett.”
  • Oh, you watched NBC’s “Today?” What a fabulous waste of time.
  • “Saved by the Bell” actor Dustin Diamond is broke. Oops.

Okay, maybe it isn’t the quotation marks, maybe it’s the fact that everything I read sounds sarcastic in my “head.”
