What the hell do I blog about?

I’ve been looking through my archives lately (not really, that would require research and I am a lazy, lazy man. So, really, I’ve been imagining what my archives are like lately).

It occurred to me that there’s really no rhyme, reason or season to what I write. I go through serious periods (again, if I were the kind of person that does research, I’d link to some serious posts here. Oh, what the hell). I go through silly periods, I sometimes even go through crazy periods and personal periods.

As I go through my various phases of intellectual, emotional and psychological peaks and dips, my post frequency and quality varies respectively. Often wildly. My blog is the menopausal woman of the blogosphere (not counting mymenopauseblog.com or everything menopause, of course)

They say that thematic blogs are the ones that get all of the hits, but that seems boring to me. I can’t imagine going back to my blog day after day and writing about the same subject. Even if I cared enough about a subject and even if I knew enough and had enough material to fill a post every day, it just seems dull to me. I mean no offense to anyone who writes a thematic blog, it’s just an alien concept to me.

Really, there’s no overarching theme to my blog… or life. Perhaps that’s fitting. Perhaps people with a theme to their life are more well known, but they probably fall into a trap where they’re identified as something and find it hard to break out of the mold. I suppose, in that respect, I’m glad my blog is not thematic.

Enough talking in negative terms. If my blog is not something, what, then, is it? What do I like to write about?

  • I like to write sequels to previous posts. A few of my ideas are so dear to me that I can dip back into the same post universe and write more about the subject.
  • I like conversations. I worry about writing too much of these, but I’m a big fan of the back and forth of a good conversation. It’s the reason that plays are the only major projects I’ve ever completed.
  • I like silliness. It’s ever so silly. To date, the favorite line I’ve written is “I’m going to go eat a grape.” If you get it, I think we’re friends. If you don’t, I think you should go eat a grape.
  • I like insight into everyday life. Sometimes, I think looking at an every day object or concept in a different way is the greatest accomplishment one can have. Other times, I think making a giant stone sculpture of yourself having your way with a goat is better.
  • I like provoking thought about abstract concepts.
  • With very few exceptions, I like everyone who has ever commented on my blog. And I’m glad it’s been discovered by more people recently. 🙂

I think I’ll update my ‘About’ page with some of the stuff in this post.

p.s. Apparently, wondering what to blog about is a common trend in the Internets. There are 1.3 BILLION results for ‘what to blog about.’ This is compared to just 479 million Google results for ‘sex.’ If you’re interested, ‘what to blog about sex‘ returned 190 million results.
