I helped bring you into this world, I can help take you out of it.

Here’s a memory:

Before I start grad school, two of the people I know here ask if anybody wants to join them for a concert in two months. I respond ‘yes’ and ask them to buy me two tickets, as I plan to be involved with a sexy lady by then. ((“Foiled!”))

When that doesn’t work, I invite my old college friend Adelay to join me for the concert. This turns out to be poorly advised as I soon become involved with a sexy lady and the whole “invite a cute friend from college to stay with you” is not well received. That’s another memory, though.

See just as Adelay arrived– and the day before the concert– my friend Susanne was scheduled to have a C-Section. Nobody else could drive her as her husband was blind, so Adelay and I drove her to the hospital.  We drove back and forth from the hospital a half-dozen times over the next two days. Susanne’s husband was blind, but he couldn’t stay with her as they had another son at home (and daycare). So he needed a ride. And Adelay and I were the only ones that could provide.

I didn’t get the chance to show Adelay much of Durham as a result. But we did manage to see the university, go out to dinner with friends (sandwiches, if I recall correctly), go to a friend’s birthday party, and watch the concert, too. I apologized to Adelay for not being able to dedicate myself fully to her having a good time, but there was no need. Being there and picking up kids and husbands while was stressful and time consuming, but we did so willingly. And it was a life changing experience. To see Susanne and her husband cradle a newborn was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced.

Today Susanne sent me a message:

Hey Carlos,

thank you so much for all your help two years ago–Kevin is turning 2 today! We really, really appreciated– and still appreciate– it.

Susanne

I did a lot of things wrong that year. And I’ve done a lot of things wrong since. But that was one thing that I know that I truly did right.
