Hay otra mujer… y se llama Nuevo México

Why am I leaving Australia again?
I know there’s a reason. A sure-fire, sealed and accepted, unavoidable reason, but I can’t think of what it is for the life of me.
Okay, these are the excuses I often use when people ask me why I’m leaving:
-
- I promised my parents I’d graduate from Uni in New Mexico.
- I graduate next year.
- I need to get my business started.
- I don’t have the money.
- I don’t have the time: my Uni requires me to attend it for two
semesters prior to any graduation.
I can graduate whenever I want, which means that 1, 2, 3, and to a certain extent 5 are bunk. For 4, I could get a job here, assuming I modify my Visa to be a work Visa and extend my regular Visa. I could also take the alternative route of just going further and further into debt, but then that would make 3 all the more important.
I remember vividly looking somewhere on my Uni’s website and finding a statement that said I needed to attend 51% of my Uni time at that Uni and the last full year before graduation, but now that I’m trying to confirm it, I can’t find it anywhere. That doesn’t mean it’s not true, it just means that it is possible for me to be mistaken.
So theoretically, if I live a tightrope, all five objections could be overcome and I could stay at least another semester.
But there’s more…
- The friend that’s going to lend me the $3+k to get my business started keeps pressuring me to do it sooner and sooner because he wants the exposure for the near future when he decides to run for office in the state.
- I fear debt and if I want to do what I want to do with my life, I need as much working capital as possible to start it. In other words, I really, really don’t have the money.
- I am doing terrible at Uni here.
- My friend(s) and family back home want me back.
… who am I kidding? I have more friends here than I ever did at home (circa 2003-2005). More than anything, it all boils down to obligations, time, and money. There just isn’t enough of either.
Australia is an demanding and expensive mistress, but there is another woman…
and her name is New Mexico!
