Where does it say ’star inset?’

Signs you might grow up to be just like me

Strong Interest Inventory for Pixel Q., age 13:

  • Investigative: Average Interest (54 percent)
  • Artistic: Average Interest (43 percent)
  • Conventional: Average Interest (46 percent)
  • Enterprising: Average Interest (40 percent)
  • Realistic: Little Interest (45 percent
  • Social: Very Little Interest (34 percent)

Apparently, my extreme lack of interest in medical science, culinary arts, and organizational management brought down my Investigative, Artistic, and Enterprising interests respectively. Somehow I had no interest in teaching (probably a rebellious streak against my parents), but a little interest in religious activities (probably from a psychological point of view).

Oh, and the terms here are misleading. They are in reference to the types of jobs I would like, not my personality. So social just means jobs in social service, medical service, etc. while investigative simply means jobs in science, math, and medicine.

And now, for what they recommended I do with my life. Keep in mind, my highest interests in any category were science, math, and writing and even those were only 60 percent.

“Very Similar” occupations:
  • Computer Programmer/Systems Analyst
  • Physicist
  • Chemist
  • Translator
  • Engineer
  • Librarian
  • Technical Writer
“Similar” occupations:
  • College professor
  • Biologist
  • Actuary

Conclusion:

As a teenager I had a little bit of interest in everything, but no overarching interest in any one thing. I liked to work alone and didn’t care for leading people, but had no preference for how I learned or how dangerous something was. I don’t think much has changed. I disagreed with the results then and disagree with them now. I find all of my ‘selected’ occupations boring with the exception of college professor and scientist.
