I’m so funny!!

So there I was, complaining about people who keep telling bad jokes or anecdotes then laughing at them. I said that nobody else finds them slightly amusing and that those people should realize how assenine they are when the person I was bitching to said:

But you do that too.

What? I thought. Surely she was crazy, stupid and just being a jerk. But the more I thought about it, the more accurate it was.

I like to think of myself as a humour connoisseur, as such I have an adept humor-detecting sense that most mortals lack. It lets me laugh at things that are only slightly funny (like my friend Claire’s mother running off with their life savings) and compose humorous things of my own that will seem like joking magic to most averagely-humored people (Like the bavarian cream pie joke).

Obviously, when I say things that nobody finds funny, the problem is with their sense of humor. They don’t get the objective hilarity of my statement.

Of course, I’ve been using that excuse for years and the only result has been that I’m always the only person left laughing. If I tell a joke in a forest, and nobody’s around to hear it, was it funny? I think it was, but if it wasn’t, then this is the humor equivalent of being schizophrenic. Perhaps what makes a perfectly good joke to me is not truly funny?

Then, when I laugh at my own jokes, it would sound utterly insane to anyone listening to me. It would be somewhat like saying something completely innocuous (“the traffic light is green”) then laughing like a madman at it (“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA”).

Perhaps I should get help. Perhaps I should stop considering myself an expert in all things funny. Perhaps I should stop laughing at what I do find funny. Perhaps I should stop saying things I find funny then laughing at them (if, as stipulated, I do do that).

……. nah!

  1. I think you’re every bit as funny as Steve Martin, but a younger vintage with a piquant nose and a pensive boquet.

Eh, what do I know? I agreed with Frank Zappa that The Shaggs were more creative than The Beatles.

And by the way, I heard it this way:

If a tree falls in the forest, and there’s no one around, and it falls on a mime, is it funny?
